About This Lesson

In this lesson I’ll explain the relationship between capos and barre chords, and how these two topics are far more related than you might think. Specifically, you can view any barre chord as an open chord that’s played with a capo. And vice versa, you can view any open chord (played with a capo) as a barre chord. In my video I’ll show you how, with several helpful graphics!

Putting This to Use with Actual Songs

First let’s look at Last of My Kind by Jason Isbell, which he plays with a capo 2nd fret. I’ll demonstrate how we can use this technique to figure out the actual chords he’s playing, without a capo — which allows us to play along using different chord voicings.

And then we have Under the Bridge by the Red Hot Chili Peppers — where I demonstrate how we can take the barre chords John Frusciante is playing, and turn them into easier-to-play thanks chords with a capo. By the way, check out my lesson teaching this song using these open chords! It’s such a fun one to play.
