Spin You Around (1/24)

by Morgan Wallen • Lesson #560 • Aug 8, 2024

In today’s lesson I’ll teach you how to play Spin You Around by Morgan Wallen — specifically, the “1/24” version he reissued in early 2024. The main focus of my lesson is the acoustic riff heard during the intro (and after each chorus)… which is incredibly fun to play, but quite tricky to get the hang of. But fear not, as I’ll walk you through it step-by-step, showing you a handful of suggested exercises to get your fingerstyle chops up to speed. I’ll also show you how I recommend strumming the verse and chorus sections, if you’re looking to sing along.

Special thanks to Song Notes members Keith, Dale, and Tony for requesting this one – I hope y’all find it helpful!

Simplified Version

If you’re struggling with the complete version just above, start with this one! As I demonstrate in my main video tutorial, this approach gets you 80% of the way there. It’s a great stepping-stone version to practice before working on the full version.

Without Drop-D

If your capo doesn’t let you attach it to only the thinnest five strings — check out this version. It removes the sixth string bass note for the D chord during the main riff, replacing it with the open fourth string. Note a huge difference (and sounds slightly less rich) — but I want to show you just the same, in case you’re in this boat.

Simpler Chord Version (Key of C, Capo 4)

If the chords in my Key of D version are simply too tricky, try this one out. It uses much easier chord shapes (Key of C chord family), and works quite well when playing with a pick. Again — doesn’t quite sound as good as the full version, but a nice option just the same.

Learning This Song Without a Capo (Key of E)

As I mention in my main tutorial, here’s a lesson from Andy Hillier where he teaches this song without a capo – using Key of E chords. For all I know, this may be exactly how Morgan (or his guitarist) is playing this in the official version. But – I consider this approach quite difficult! As you have to do quite a bit of barring just to make the various chords work. Just the same, I want to share it here so you have all options available. Good luck!
