Fingerstyle Fun feat. "Mama I'm Coming Home" by Ozzy Osbourne

Lesson #596 • Aug 3, 2025

About This Lesson

In today’s lesson I show a fun fingerstyle groorve inspired by the intro to Ozzy Osbourne’s 1991 hit Mama I’m Coming Home. While I won’t teach the full song in this lesson, I do take the beautiful intro sequence and teach you my own spin on it using harmonized 6ths in standard tuning. While you could indeed play this with a pick, I’ll be using fingerstyle — and I’ll walk you through the approach I’m using step-by-step. All in all, this makes for a fun bite-sized groove you can settle into while working on your fingerstyle technique and/or harmonized double-stops. Enjoy!

Zoomed Playthrough

Here’s a short video of the 8 measure sequence I teach, played without talking or singing — with tabs on screen. There are two parts, each of which I play twice before continuing to the next part. End with a strum of E major, or repeat things from the very beginning and start again.

Here’s some similar lessons I recommend. All of these are in the Key of E, similar to this song, and use various techniques also at play with my main tutorial above.

If you want to reference Ozzy’s original recording, note he is tuned down 1/2 step. For your convenience, here’s a version that’s pitch-adjusted so it sounds good in standard tuning. For example, the opening melody and interlude (going from A to E) will match what you hear in my exercise.

If you’d like to learn the full song, here’s a cover from Mr. Tabs where he shows the tabs on screen for the entire song. I have no plans on teaching this full song, as videos like this one do an amazing job with note-for-note recreation.
