About This Lesson

In today’s lesson I’ll teach you how I play Ramble On by Led Zeppelin. Instead of showing a 1:1 recreation of what Jimmy Page plays, I’ll demonstrate a few easier ways to play most sections of this song. This allows us mortal guitarists to have fun with this song, and even sing along while strumming! This one is great fun, and I’m excited to share it with you.

  • 0:00 Playthrough
  • 1:31 Overview

Zoomed Playthrough

Here’s a bonus video where I play through every single section of the song I’ve taught: main riff, strummed verse, pre-chorus, chorus, interlude, and even the bassline I teach in lesson #625. Tabs on screen, zoomed in, no talking, with four beat count-in before I start playing.

Ramble On Reference Recordings

Led Zeppelin’s 1969 album recording – notice how Jimmy Page continues playing the main riff during the verse. I’m not doing that, because it’s so hard to sing at the same time! Just the same, it’s helpful to listen for reference.

2026 live performance – from Robert Plant with the band Saving Grace. This one is slightly slower (88-90bpm), and a bit less high energy… but still sounds amazing. This was the main inspiration for my lesson above.

What Makes This Song Great? deep-dive from Rick Beato. His breakdowns are always great! Glad to see him tackle this song.
