About This Lesson
In this lesson I’ll teach you how to play Love Me Two Times, the blues-rock classic from The Doors. This song strings together a handful of groove-heavy guitar riffs, which are combined in a few different ways throughout the song. For each riff, I’ll walk you through a few ways to play things… allowing you to put together an overall arrangement that works well for your taste & skill levels. Let’s get into it!

Six Variations to the Main Riff
There’s many ways you can slightly modify the main (E7) riff heard in the opening of this song. This video shows you six of these variations, complete with tabs. Corey Heuvel’s cover (below) uses all of these. My advice, if you want to use this, is learn them all until you’re comfortably able to seamlessly switch between them without missing a beat. Then, feel free to integrate them into your own playing as you desire.
Song Structure, Strumming, and Singing Tips
This song is incredibly difficult to sing, as most of the vocal phrases are sung over the bassline riff that leads into the “trill” riff. I find this very tricky. If you still want to sing along, this video gives you some practical tips to simplify the guitar parts — even if that means using constant strumming, without any riffing. This will let you get through the full song with much less difficulty. From there, if you wish, you can then integrate some (but not all) of the riffing into your strumming… which I demonstrate.
Zoomed Playthrough of Each Section
For your convenience, here’s the playthrough I do (same as the end of my main tutorial) shared as a single video, without any talking. I count in for two full measure before beginning to play. I go through each of the four guitar parts one time each.
Related and Recommended
First, here’s the amazing acoustic cover of this song from Corey Heuvel. He plays the full song, solo included, while singing. Incredibly impressive! He uses many variations to the main riff, all of which I tab out in my first bonus video above.
Here’s some related & recommended tutorials I’ve made that help with some of the techniques used in this song.
