In today’s lesson I’ll teach you to hear the difference between a straight vs. shuffle rhythm, using 5 different riffs played using both styles. While you’ll often find the shuffle (or “swing”) feel used in the blues, it also occurs in various other genres. This is an incredibly valuable skill to have as a guitarist, for both playing and listening to music.

Audio Practice Tracks

Here’s three different drum tracks for you to use to play anything using the straight OR shuffle rhythm. All three tracks are the same tempo (speed), using a common 4/4 time signature. The only difference is how much shuffle (or swing) is added to the 8th notes. Each track loops for ~5 minutes, allowing you to practice whatever you like before things eventually fade out.

My suggested practice routine? Play anything over each of these. You may wish to start with any of the 5 example riffs I play in my lesson. Listen to the small rhythmic adjustments required (from you & your playing) to perfectly sit within the drum groove. Remember, the difference between straight & shuffle rhythm is entirely with the 8th notes… that is, the off-beat notes occuring between the one two three four quarter notes.
