by Pure Prairie League • Lesson #504 • Jul 29, 2023

Hey there, friends! In this week’s lesson I’m excited to share my full song lesson for Amie by Pure Prairie League. Chords, progression, strumming, and rhythm are the focus of this lesson. I’ll start with the basics and walk you through everything step-by-step. With the strumming in particular, I’ll show you a few options to ensure you’re setup for success no matter your skill level.

If you want to learn the intro riff, see lesson #488 where I explain it in great detail. Otherwise, everything else for the full song is on this page: the song sheet, my practice track, my secret stash strumming video, and some other resources at the bottom. Enjoy!

Practice Track

Here’s a practice track I made which loops through me playing the progressions used in the verse and chorus, over approximately 4 minutes. Chords are shown on screen, so you always know exactly what to play next. You can use this to practice any strumming pattern you want. Given this is slowed down (140bpm), it’s a great stepping stone should you want to be able to play things full speed.

My “Secret Stash” Strumming Arrangement

Here’s a look at my preferred strumming pattern for this song, which heavily utilizes alternating bass notes. It’s a bit trickier to get the hang of, but I think it sounds great and is fun to play! I’ll explain what I’m doing, show a slow playthrough with tabs of each section (verse & chorus), before doing a full speed playthrough showing it in action.
