About This Lesson
In this lesson, I’ll show you a fun and practical way to learn guitar triads by arranging the melody to Happy Birthday in the key of G. I’ll use triads to add harmonic depth to this familiar tune, helping you see how melody and triads work together on the fretboard.
Premium members can also explore alternate versions of the arrangement, demonstrating one of the most powerful aspects of triads: the same notes can often be played in multiple places on the neck. This makes Happy Birthday a perfect vehicle for developing fretboard awareness, triad fluency, and musical creativity.

Part 2 - Same Melody, Different Triads
In this continuation of my main lesson, I teach the same melody but using different triad positions. This demonstrates one of the best things about triads: in many cases, you can play the same notes (to the ear) using different triads elsewhere on the fretboard. Learning multiple ways to play the same song is an amazing way to fully develop any skill, triads included.
Playthrough: Variation #1
This is the version I teach in my main YouTube tutorial above. I playthrough slowly, without talking, showing the tabs on screen. Note, my rhythm is loose and I slow down as necessary to play each triad cleanly. That’s the goal with this lesson.
Playthrough: Variation #2
This shows how to play the same Happy Birthday melody, using different triad shapes wherever possible. I walk through this arrangement in my Part 2 video above.
Related and Recommended
First, here’s a very similar lesson I made nearly six years ago. It also teach Happy Birthday, using some triads. However, this lesson adds in a few other techniques such as double-stops, partial barre chords, and three-string power chords (which technically aren’t triads, as they’re lacking one of the three notes a chord is built with).
If you’re looking for more fun with triads, here’s some other lessons I’ve made. The first lesson below includes a PDF with some of my most extensive triad guides in print-friendly form:
